A recent post on the Half-Life 2 Fallout forums, made by Gabe Newell himself, seems to confirm what many theorized to be impossible - Half-Life 2 will be going gold on Monday, August 30th.
The post, which simply states " We're going gold monday..." has caused quite a stir among the internet community. Initially slated for release in September of 2003, Half-Life 2 underwent a significant delay just weeks before its planned release, partially due to theft of its source code. Newell's post signals the end of an era which has seen nothing but heartache for those anticipating the title.
Though the title began pre-loading to Steam subscribers earlier this week, the downloads were encrypted, missing several key features required for the game as these portions were still being debugged. Going gold would mean that the game has been approved for release, indicating that the debugging process has concluded. Early estimates, which generalize the manufacturing process as taking one to two weeks, would place Half-Life 2 in stores around September 13th at the absolute latest. Interestingly enough, retailer EBGames currently lists the title as a November 1st release.
Though his post conflicts with EBGame's expected ship date, Newell haa previously stated that they expected bug testing to wrap up sometime in August. Either way, we'll know for sure once Monday swings around. In the meantime, well, we can only hope.

Valve announced today that reportson their forums last week that Half-Life 2 would go gold today were patently false.
According to the company, the "gold" post by Gabe Newell on the forums were posted by a user who had guessed Gabe's forums password. Ironically, the password was a fairly simple "gaben." The user then went on to post, as Gabe, that Half-Life 2 would go gold on Monday, August 30th.
"After a close scrutiny of Gabe Newell's account history on the forums, we've come to the conclusion that the gold post is a fake... After one crazy night of theories, server mayhem and IP tracing, we've finally gotten to the bottom of this mess. In a twist of hilarity, it seems that Gabe Newell's account password was set to 'gaben'. Person x guessed this and made the "going gold on Monday" post which we've heard so much about. The user (who we believe is the same person x) then made this post just minutes ago using Gabe's account:
Maybe he shouldn't have used 'gaben' for his password. Come on Gabe, you could of [sic] thought of something better than that
After a quick double-check, it seems that this was exactly what happened."
