Earlier this week, various retailers began receiving marketing materials indicating a "new low price" for the GameBoy Advance SP. The price drop, rumored to occur on Thursday September 2nd, will see Nintendo lowering the cost of the standard GBA SP unit to $79.99 in North America. It's expected that Nintendo will also reduce the price of the system in other regions, including Canada and Europe, but there's been no word yet on an exact figure.
Slicing the price of the GBA SP is a smart move for Nintendo. Not only are two Pokemon titles due out later next week, but the company also plans to introduce a new handheld, the Nintendo DS, sometime this fall. While the launch price of the DS is currently unknown, most theorize the system should retail between $149.99 and $179.99. Enlarging the price gap between the two platforms reduces the possibility that they will eat into each other's sales, especially given that the DS is compatible with all Game Boy Advance software. This also strengthens Nintendo's stance that the two systems are intended to co-exist, not compete.
