Saavy net scavengers might have noticed a recent string of articles popping up on websites like Whack-a-Moles lately, regarding the Xbox successor and backwards compatibility. For the uninitiated, backwards compatibility is the ability of a new kind of hardware to function on older media. A prime example is the PlayStation 2, which can play both PS2 specific games and games originally developed for the first PlayStation console.
The recent stories on the net claimed that Xbox officials had announced that the next Microsoft console would definitely not be backwards compatible, therefore unable to play games designed for the current Xbox.
As you can imagine, this started off a hailstorm of forum threads and heated posts from gamers who were hoping the feature would be included. A Microsoft spokesperson today responded to the rumors, calling them "nothing more than pulp fiction. Microsoft hasn't made any announcements regarding the next generation, so it's far too early to speculate about specifics, including backward compatibility."
In other words, we ask that the general public try and remain calm. Although this recent announcement doesn't guarantee backwards compatibility, it gives us hope that the feature hasn't been thrown out the window just yet.
