Japanese news source Yomuri Online reports today that the PlayStation 3's CELL microprocessor will go into mass production in the second half of 2005.
The CELL microprocessor is being developed by Toshiba, Sony, and IBM. Toshiba spent 200 billion yen on a production line at its plant in Oita - Toshiba's base for mass production of integrated chips.
The CELL microprocessor's functional capacity will be up to ten times that of regular processors. Outside of the PlayStation 3 the CELL will be used in DVD recorders, digital televisions, network peripherals, and computerized appliances like air conditioners and refridgerators.
If this means that the PlayStation 3 will be released in Japan in late 2005 or the spring of 2006 is still to be determined.
