TOKYO--According to the Nihon Sangyou Journal, Sega president Hisao Oguchi revealed during the company's financial announcements last week that Sega will be working together with Sammy in the arcade game business. This is the first time that Sega has made any official statements regarding future collaborations with Sammy, its new top shareholder.
Oguchi commented that Sega is making plans to release games on Sammy's Atomiswave platform, though he stressed that the decision to do so is not yet final. The two companies are also looking into their overseas business, and planning to combine their distributors and distribution routes wherever possible.
Sammy Corporation, Japan's leading Pachinko machine manufacturer, acquired a 22.4 percent stake of Sega from CSK in December and became Sega's top shareholder. Aggressively extending its reach into the arcade market, Sammy has been urging Sega to focus in the sector and to develop new titles for Sammy's Atomiswave arcade cabinet.
As for the mobile console sector, Oguchi did not clearly state that Sega will be developing for the Nintendo DS, but he hinted that the company is ready. "We have already acquired the development kit", commented Oguchi, referring to the tools required in creating games for the double-screen handheld machine. Oguchi also commented that Sega is "prepared to release software [titles]" on the Sony's upcoming portable console PSP, scheduled for a worldwide launch at the end of the year.
