Sony woos developers with price cut for PS3 development kit While the PlayStation 3 features a Blu-ray player and some powerful hardware, as a gaming console it has no hope of surpassing the competition without a strong game library. With a lower installed base than its competitors and a more challenging development environment, Sony faces some challenges in wooing developers and publishers. The company has recently made a bold move in the hopes of gaining more support for their system: the PlayStation 3 development kits have been slashed in price. You can now buy the kits from Sony for ¥950,000 in Japan, $10,250 in North America, and €7,500 in Europe. This is around half the cost of the original kits. "As more and more new titles are developed for the PS3 format, SCEI will significantly reduce the price of the Reference Tool in order to contribute to the cost saving measures of the development community," the company said in a statement . The development kit will also now come with support for SN Systems programming tools, which Sony hopes will aid developers in their development tasks. The PlayStation 3 has gotten a reputation as being notoriously hard to program for, with cross-platform games suffering from delays and a loss of framerate on Sony's console. arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20071119-sony-woos-developers-with-price-cut-for-ps3-development-kit.html
