Today Nintendo announced that the company's F-Zero game franchise will be making the leap to the world of anime in the form of TV series F-Zero: Falcon Densetsu (that would be The Legend of Falcon.) Working together are Dentsu, an advertising firm, anime studio Ashi Production, and network TV Tokyo, along with -- obviously -- Nintendo, to get the TV show on air this October. Nintendo has also announced a partnership with Bandai to produce toys based on the show, as well as plans for publisher Shogakukan (who happen to be part-owners of longtime U.S. manga publisher Viz and the company responsible for all of the Pokémon comics) to start a manga serial based on the story.
The story: in the future year of 2201, the power of science is extremely prevalent in the lives on mankind, which has traveled into space. Despite this, the gulf between rich and poor has grown. However, the F-Zero races are wildly popular throughout the entire galaxy. There are circuits for this high speed racing, which reaches speeds faster than the speed of sound, all across the galaxy. Reckless pilots who seek the huge monetary prizes and prestige of winning these races gather. The extremely popular and mysterious masked racer Captain Falcon and newcomer Ryu Suzaku enter into a fierce battle for the championship.
One hundred and fifty years before this story, the galaxy had been full of corrupt cops and secret enforcers, and Ryu Suzaku got into a terrible accident. Somehow, he was resurrected in 2201 -- but it seems that due to the popularity of F-Zero racing, things are falling back to the way they once were. Ryu vows to disconnect with his past and continue to race.
Popular F-Zero characters Captain Falcon, Dr. Stewart, Samurai Goro and their ships will all be in the anime. The show will feature 3D racing scenes and 2D character animation; Nintendo is promising a fresh take on the F-Zero universe. We're likely to see this show here -- given the successes of the Pokémon cartoons and the Kirby show, along with the increasing popularity of anime. When, where and how are other questions entirely; hopefully we'll find out soon.
