Sega will continue to reorganize in order to remain profitable.
There will be three relatively straight forward mergers: Sonic Team & United Game Artists, Hitmaker & Sega Rosso, and Wow Entertainment & Overworks. Amusement Vision & Smilebit will also combine, but to form two development teams. Sega-AM2 will remain as they are, and Yu Suzuki will be heading a new team. The names of the new and merged teams aren't yet known. Sonic Team & United Game Artists could be Timothy Claypole.
Each team will have a particular focus. For example, Sega-AM2 will concentrate on games for the 'hardcore' audience such as beat 'em ups, and one of the Amusement Vision & Smilebit teams will create sports games. The rest we're not too sure on, due to the report being in Japanese, but we think Hitmaker & Sega Rosso might be making games for the light user, and the other Amusement Vision & Smilebit team could be doing games for all ages.
Sega, also one of the major arcade operators in Japan, will continue to close down arcades that are not generating income and will build new arcades in other locations. Sega acknowledges that although its arcades provide a stable source of income, it is also a business that is difficult to expand. Sega hopes to provide arcade owners with a more-cost-efficient method of operating their business, such as strengthening rental arrangements and making games updatable via network connections. Sega also plans to broaden its range of customers by creating new entertainment facilities targeted toward the older audience that do not necessarily go to video game arcades.
