Scene 001 -- Shinyo Academy
A huge shaft of light erupts out of a building, shattering nearby windows. The shaft goes straight into the night sky, disappearing in the high clouds. Electricity goes out across the city. The shaft disappears and electricity gradually returns the skyline to normal.
Scene 002 -- Hijiridana High School
Schoolgirls in the bathroom talk about the weird column of light. They also gossip about kids being taken away by the Angel of Death, Boogiepop. We see high school sophomore Moto Tonomura. She's shy and awkward, but her friend Yasuko tries to get her to go out with her to meet some boys. Looking outside, Moto notices the sky is distorted by a strange shimmering glare.
Yasuko drags Moto along to a karaoke bar. In the bar, they talk about Saotome, one of the boys who disappeared. Someone repeats a rumor that people have seen Saotome's ghost. Moto thinks he was killed by Boogiepop. In the bar's bathroom, Yasuko tells Moto she didn't mention she went out with Saotome because her boyfriend gets jealous.
Scene 003 -- Junior high school, summer
We go back in time to when Moto and Yasuko were in junior high school, when Yasuko and Saotome went out. Back then, Yasuko was shy and quiet like Moto. But Yasuko became a free spirit and cheated on Saotome. Eventually they broke up. Moto found herself falling for him, but she never revealed her feelings, and he ended up going to a different high school.
Scene 004 -- Present
Leaving the bar, Moto lags behind the group. Saotome materializes before her. She wakes up the next morning and becomes obsessed with washing herself. At school, Yasuko asks Moto why she ran away screaming last night. Yasuko also reveals that Saotome confessed his love for an older woman, Nagi Kirima, but Nagi blew him off.
Moto goes to the school nurse, but a strange boy is there. He approaches her and says there's a spider attached to her heart, a knot created by her bottling up her feelings.
Scene 005 -- Shinyo Academy
Moto goes to Saotome's school. She meets a girl who goes there, Toka Miyashita, who tells her that Nagi has left the school. Moto leaves and sees a burst of energy flashing along the telephone lines. She chases it, a voice telling her to follow. She ends up in an alley, and again Saotome materializes before her.
But is it really Saotome? And who's the second figure in the shadows? Watch "Boogiepop Phantom" to find out!
