Zurich-based software company Procedural claims its newest version of CityEngine can build “literally [any] city in the world” within minutes by importing data from OpenStreetMap.
Procedural’s 3D-city modelling engine was released back in July and was announced along with the company’s media-savvy project of building a 3D Rome in a single day (known as the Rome Reborn Project). Now the company claims that CityEngine’s compatibility with OpenStreetMap allows professionals to rapidly create 3D replicas of all cities that feature on the map.
“Usually it can take up to several man-years to model a 3D city” says Pascal Mueller, CEO of Procedural. “The CityEngine significantly accelerates this process. And with the new OpenStreetMap feature, users can import now every urban street network in the world. On the corresponding parcels, users can then instantly generate 3D buildings by using the CityEngine’s unique grammar rule engine.”
While end-users shouldn’t expect such a system to build the next setting for Mirror’s Edge, the engine introduces export functionality to Pixar’s RenderMan and Google Earth.
