Microsoft has announced new efforts aimed at boosting the popularity of its XBox video game console.
Users of the XBox Live online gaming network now can talk to each other remotely while logged in. Soon, they'll be able to see their fellow players' faces.
The announcements came at the start of the Electronic Entertainment Expo, better known as E3, which draws thousands of game developers to Los Angeles from around the world to showcase the latest in video game technology.
Microsoft also announced a partnership with Electronic Arts, which previously kept its hit sports games off the XBox Live service. The official XBox Web site says that games will include Madden NFL 2005, FIFA Football 2005 and NBA Live 2005.
It has also unveiled a service to provide gamers with 1980s arcade titles.
Xbox's video-chat service will be launched this year first in Japan, eventually making its way to the North American network.
