Reuters is reporting today that with nearly 6.5 million units sold, the "Big N" was #1 in Japan for the business year ending March 31st; this information comes from game magazine publisher Enterbrain Inc. Much of Nintendo's success is due to the popularity of such hit titles as Mario Kart: Double Dash and Mario Party 5. Square Enix followed Nintendo in 2nd place with nearly four million titles sold.
More important (for gamers, at least) than sales figures, however, is that Enterbrain President Hirokazu Hamamura claims Nintendo is set to unveil 30 DS titles at this year's E3 in May. Mr. Hamamura said that he is very excited about Nintendo's new handheld and that he is eagerly awaiting its unveiling. "This will be a product unlike anything available right now and it will come with a touch panel," said Hamamura.
If Nintendo actually does have 30 games in the works already, the odds are that the vast majority are first-party titles, unless Nintendo entered into more 3rd party agreements for the DS without going public. And, unless Nintendo had actually been working on DS titles months in advance of the issued press release announcing the handheld, it seems that the company's readiness to have 30 games on display this quickly is a remarkable feat. Regardless, E3 should be quite exciting for Nintendo and all of us.
