As reports emanating from a CNN News article now suggest that the Xbox 2 (or Xbox Next?), will contain a hard-drive after all, Redmond possibly bowing to developer pressure for the inclusion of such hardware.
Having originally inked a deal with M-Systems for a Flash-style data storage system, it appears this may no longer be the case if CNN and their patent expositions are to be believed: U.S. patent 6,716,102, granted Tuesday to Microsoft, covers methods for storing data about games in progress. The patent specifically references "a gaming system (that) includes a hard disk drive for storing applications and other data," indicating Microsoft may be more committed to equipping future Xbox configurations with onboard storage than previously thought.
What this means for the Flash idea is unknown, though hopefully all will be revealed at E3 next month.
In other news (briefly), Xbox hardware sales have reportedly doubled since the price-slash stateside, and analysts believe that this increase may continue further once transparent green Xbox / Halo bundles arrive shortly. All eyes are now on Sony, too.
