Red Dead Revolver was originally a Capcom project that got canned and then later picked up by Rockstar.
[/i][/center]At its heart, Red Dead Revolver is a cinematic 3rd person western-style shooter. The game looks and plays like a movie based on the old west. There will be plenty of gunfights, but there will be other missions in which you’ll be riding animals, commanding stage coaches, battling aboard trains, and yes, saving the damsel in distress. The game will have over 20 chapters to play through.
Red Dead Revolver has a huge arsenal of weapons, all of which are very realistic to the time period. Arms will range from six shooters, pistols, and rifles; to dynamite, Molotov cocktails, and Gattling guns. Since it’s the 1800’s, there will be no scopes on rifle, but when using them, the camera will zoom in a bit to help accuracy. Shooting bandits and other enemies nets you money and depending how accurate you are and which weapon you use, the amount of money you receive will change. Shooting multiple enemies can give you bonus multipliers which will increase your bounty. Money is used to regain health, repair weapons, upgrade weapons, and unlock various items in multiplayer.
Red Dead Revolver will feature five playable characters including Red and General Diego. Each character has a special ability and Red’s special ability, Dead Eye, was the only one we were allowed to see. Dead Eye is a Matrix-esque slowdown mode which, by dragging the targeting reticule over enemies, will highlight different target hotspots. When you press the right trigger you unload bullets into all of the highlighted targets. When played, it feels very much how the targeting is in Panzer Dragoon Orta, except much quicker and well, western.
Dueling will also play a big part in Red Dead Revolver, and while the specifics on mechanics are still being worked out, you’ll have to be quick on the draw or you’ll find yourself dead. In the build we saw, you have to pull the right analog stick back to grab your gun, then push the stick forward to draw your gun, highlight the target spots by moving your reticule over your enemy, and then pull the right trigger to let the bullets fly.
While the PS2 version looked decent, and will support widescreen, Xbox owners will get more special features, and better performance. Red Dead Revolver will support progressive scan, 480p widescreen, and Dolby Digital on the Xbox only. While you will not be able to play Red Dead Revolver over Xbox Live, the game will be Xbox Live aware (you can access friends list and accept game invites.) The Xbox version will also have faster saves, twice the frame rate, higher texture resolution, quicker load times, and improved sound quality over the PS2 version.
While our time with Red Dead Revolver was short, it seemed like it had promise. Although a western game doesn’t seem like the norm from a company like Rockstar, we’re looking forward to seeing more.
