Sony Corp has released an announcement that a study of the online gaming habits of video game players showed that peak usage time was between the hours of 5 PM and 11 PM, the same span coveted as “Prime Time” by television networks. Adding insult to injury, the study was performed during the month of February, known as “sweeps” to the television industry. And as if that were not enough to send television and advertising executives into a cataleptic fit, the study also showed that online 65% of game players during these highly coveted “Prime Time” hours of 8 PM and 11 PM were between the ages of 18 and 34, the target demographic that bankrolls television and advertising studios worldwide. With 2.6 million PlayStation 2 units shipped with online capabilities, not to mention the Xbox Live gaming service, a multitude of MMORPG such as Star Wars Galaxies and practically every PC game title having an online component, the current and potential number of viewers switching from television to games is shaking up the Television industry.
